Louhintahiekka undertook exceptionally demanding street construction work in Suvilahti.
Louhintahiekka carried out the extension of Vilhonvuorenkatu and the construction of Koksikatu as part of the Kalasatama area redevelopment. The project was exceptionally demanding for a street construction site.
The project included the construction of the western extension of Koksikatu and Vilhonvuorenkatu, as well as the intersection area of Sörnäisten Rantatie.
The work required our special expertise in the replacement of contaminated soil, foundation construction using sheet pile walls, and the renewal of municipal infrastructure.
A total of 110,000 tons of contaminated soil was replaced, carried out in a sealed tent due to the hazardous nature of the work. Workers wore respiratory protection and carried personal gas detectors. The soil in had become particularly contaminated due to by-products from over 100 years of energy production in the area.
Additionally, the project involved cleaning by diving a 300-meter section of an operational concrete sewer with a diameter of 2.3 meters, which contained heavily contaminated soil.
The site was chosen as the Piling Site of the year 2021 by Betoniteollisuus ry – Association of Concrete Industry in Finland.
