NCC – We Land

Louhintahiekka carried out an exceptionally demanding earthworks and excavation project above the metro line in Ruoholahti, Helsinki.

We Land is a 14-story office building in Helsinki offering 20,000 m² of office space. At the heart of the building are open spaces for the local community and businesses, featuring high-end restaurants, cafés, and spaces for various events. The building was constructed in accordance with the BREEAM environmental certification, emphasizing sustainable development and ecological solutions.

Louhintahiekka was involved in design management and carried out among others, excavation and filling work, rock blasting, bored piling, rock reinforcement, and site infrastructure.

We Land was an exceptionally challenging project because the rock blasting work took place directly above the metro tunnel. This imposed strict scheduling and safety requirements; the metro could only be stopped for 30–60 seconds during blasting. As a result, the blasting had to be carefully planned and executed outside of the metro's rush hours.

Additionally, the site was located by the sea, presenting further challenges in terms of flood protection. We built 3-meter-high flood barriers around the construction site to prevent water from entering under any circumstances, accounting for extreme conditions like storms and unusual weather events. The bored pile walls extended 10 meters below sea level to ensure stability and protection throughout the project.

The project showcased Louhintahiekka's extensive technical expertise and commitment to environmental considerations. We Land stands as a modern example of how office construction can meet strict environmental requirements while offering high-quality services and spaces for employees and the local community.
